A Clinical Observation and Bacteriological Investigation for Acute Respiratory Infections in Infancy and Childhood
ãôÑ®üº/Shin, Ki Whan
Abstract
A group of 115 cases of acute respiratory infections in infants and children was studied in Pisna Children¢¥s Charity Hospital during the last 2 and half years, from Jan. 1962. to July, 1964. and bacteriological studies, sensitivity tests and roentgenological anaysis were evaluated.
Results are follows:
1) Most cases of acute respiratory infections in infants and children are largely confined to the group, under the age of 12 months with 74 cases(64.3%).
2) A confirmed disease in acute respiratory infections included pneumonia with 81 cases, empyema, lung abscess, bronchitis and laryngitis.
3) Roentgenological findings in pneumonia were more prominent in lobar pneumonia with 55 cases(68%) than bronchopneumonia and largely confined to right upper lobe in 70.4%.
4) The order of bacteria isolated from acute respiratory infections were staphylococcus(34%), Beta-streptococcus(21%), and pneumococcus(20.2%) and gram negative bacilli(20%) tec.
5) Antibiotic sensitivities by the disc method showed high sensitivity in general for broad spectrum anbiotics but high resistance to streptomycin and penicillin, while gram negative bacilli were high resistant to all antibiotics, Staphylococcus was resistant to streptomycin in 46% and penicillin in 44.8%.
6) The mortality was 22.7% in most cases of the group under the age of 6 months with malnutrition and other systemic disease.
